This itinerary is centered around the annual June 24 Inti Raymi Festival of the Sun in Cusco. Start and end dates are somewhat flexible around June 24 when Cusco fills with people from all over the world and from the small communities of Peru. Hundreds of local dancers and musicians accompany The Inca and his wife, their security detail, servants, attendants through Cusco and up to the magnificent site of Sacsayhuaman for the final offering and ceremony to the Sun God.

Day 1 (June 22, 2022): Arrive in Lima

Your 8 Day / 7 Night Inti Raymi, Cusco Itinerary begins in Lima when you arrive. You will be met in the Lima airport greeting transferred privately to your Miraflores or San Isidro hotel. Enjoy Peru’s finest archeological, engineering and architectural sites left to us by the great Incan Culture in and around Cusco and the Sacred Valley. Every area of Peru has its own distinct culinary influences, flavors, and dishes. This is travel at its best.

Day 2 (June 23, 2022): Lima – Cusco flight

After breakfast check out and be sure to leave nothing behind in your Lima hotel. In the lobby next to the front door register with the bellman for your shuttle transfer to the Lima Airport (4 min). In Cusco you will be greeted outside the terminal and driven by private van (15 min) to check in to your downtown hotel, Rest, breathe and drink the complimentary coca tea provided by your hotel to acclimate to Cusco’s 11,000 ft elevation. Eat lightly, don’t smoke, drink nor exert yourselves your first day in Cusco. In the afternoon you can take a walk to the nearby Main Square. Overnight Cusco. (B)

Day 3 (June 24, 2022): Inti Raymi Festival of the Sun (Full Day)

Cusco, Perú is the site of Latin America’s second-largest festival. The Inti Raymi is celebrated every year on June 24th and was once the most important festival of the Incan empire – Tawantinsuyu.
The Sun was the main deity worshiped in the Inca culture. In today’s Inti Raymi Festival all of the significant Sun Festival rituals are re-enacted (don’t worry, the llama sacrifices are simulated!). This special day also includes The New Fire Celebration. No fires were allowed in the city this day until the fire created by the hollow mirror was used to concentrate the sunlight onto animal fur and kindling. Only then were all other fires started from this source. You will also see the Inca representative carried on a litter and toasted with chicha (a fermented drink). In an appropriate finale, The Inca gives a speech in the native Quechua language. Overnight Cusco. (B, L)

08:30 AM Group Transfer to Coricancha Temple.
09:00 AM Ceremony in Coricancha: 45 minutes.
10:30 AM Ceremony in the Main Square. The arrival of the Inca and Court: 1 hour.
01:00 PM Group Transfer to Sacsayhuaman for Grand Ceremony and Start of the Sun Festival (2.5 hours)
Group transfer to return to hotels.

Day 4 (June 25, 2022): Private tour Machu Picchu. Train to Ollantaytambo

Early. after breakfast, you will be met by your guide and driver and driven to the train station for your train to Aguas Calientes, the small town below Machu Picchu. At Aguas Calientes, the buses run continuously up to Machu Picchu entrance (20 min). Enjoy 2 hrs with your guide then have time to hike and explore the park on your own. Machu Picchu was probably an estate of the Inca Pachacutec, who also designed Cusco. It was a town with individual homes for nobility made in the classical Inca style with polished dry-stone walls. Its 3 three primary structures are the Intihuatana, the Temple of the Sun, and the Room of the Three Windows. The magnificence of this site is fully appreciated at sunrise. As the mist rises just after sunrise the site itself is revealed to you. Machu Picchu sits hidden amongst other spectacular surrounding mountains.

When finished take one of the continuous running buses 20 min back down to Aguas Calientes and be at the Aguas Calientes train station at least 30 minutes before your departing train to Ollantaytambo or Cusco (90 min or 3.5 hrs). Overnight Cusco. (B)

Day 5 (June 26, 2022): Private van Cusco – Puno (10 hrs)

Be sure to leave nothing behind in your Cusco hotel. After breakfast and check-out be sure to leave nothing behind in your Cusco hotel. 06:30 hotel greeting and transfer to your tour bus for a 7 AM departure to Puno(1o hrs). Stops along the way include the Sistine Chapel of the Andes, Andahuaylillas. This is a very pretty cathedral with frescoes on almost every wall. Sorry, no pictures allowed. The temple ruins at Raqchi are magnificent at the second stop. There are remains of cottages, warehouses, and terraces and it is a beautifully excavated clean site. The remains of the largest Incan church are there and the tight stonework left standing is incredible.

Next at the small town of Sicuani, you’ll stop for a sit-down relaxing outdoor buffet Andean lunch. The next stop is La Raya, the highest point on the route at 4,300 meters elevation. The final stop is the museum in Pukaraou to see the ancient pre-Incans artifacts. When you arrive in Puno you will be met and taken to check in to your hotel. Overnight Puno. (B, L)

Day 6 (June 27, 2022): Group Motor Yacht Tour Lake Titicaca, Uros, Taquile. (Full Day)

After an excellent breakfast, you will be taken to Lake Titicaca (10 minutes) for a visit to the floating man-made Islands of Uros on a group motor yacht tour. Here you will meet, up-close the citizens who have preserved their old traditions and still live on the water. “The Aquatic Tribe” will show you how they have kept their customs, make their islands and display their crafts made of reeds. The motor yacht tour then continues to the island of Taquile, inhabited by native Quechuas. On Taquile, you can appreciate and purchase some of the finest handmade crafts and basket weavings in Peru to support the very friendly and welcoming island people. Typical lunch included on Taquile of fresh lake trout or a vegetarian option. Return to Puno by motor yacht and group van back to your hotel. Long day. Brimmed hats, sunglasses, water, sunscreen, and jackets are essential since it will be cold on the water with strong sun. Overnight Puno. (B, L)

Day 7 (June 28, 2022): Private Cusco City Tour (1/2 day)

At 14:00 you will be met in your hotel to enjoy the wonderful Cusco City Tour. See the Temple of the Sun, Coricancha near the center of Cusco. Visit the famous Catedral in Main Square. Then proceed out of the city by bus to see the nearby sites of Sacsayhuaman- 15 minutes outside of Cusco with its huge walls comprised of monolithic stones, Q’enqo – a small cave-like structure used in Inca ceremonies, Pucapucara- the small fortress and Tambomachay with its fountains and small canals. All of these sites are near each other and played an important part in the Inca’s ceremonies religious and civic. After completion of the tour, you will be returned to your hotel. Complimentary dinner tonight in Uchu Peruvian steakhouse which is a quick 4-minute walk from your hotel. This is the place to try the famous alpaca steaks. Overnight Cusco. (B)

Day 8 (June 29, 2022): Cusco – Lima flight

You will be met in your Puno hotel (3 hrs before departure time) in time for your 90 min flight to Lima. Check in to your departing flight home in the Lima airport. (B)
